I Loove Spelling Bees

Alright, let me begin by saying that I can't spell, but I LOVE spelling bees!!!

Proof: My very own copy of Spellbound, the great spelling bee documentary . . .

(Yes, I am a nerd.)

When I bought it, some guy in line said, "Spellbound? Is that scary?"
"Yes."
What's it about?"
"Spelling."
End of conversation.

Recently I watched the Scripp's National Spelling Bee. I mean, c'mon, how can you not love it? The tension. The drama. The words I can't even pronounce, much less attempt to spell without hurting myself . . .

As some of you know, I appeared in the Tony Award-winning Broadway musical The 25th Annual Putnam County Spelling Bee on August 24, 2005 at 2 p.m.

Four audience members were selected to appear on stage to sing and dance and spell. I didn't let the fact that I can't sing or dance or spell stop me. Here's what happened. It was -t-h-r-i-l-l-i-n-g.

And now for some spelling fun for all. These are from William's Steig's The Bad Speller. Since my photos are kinda dinky and blurry, I'll write what's on each page. Your mission is to interpret it . . .

DAWG MUTHR N CHILED

DUNKY MAJISHAN PRODOOSNG A RABIT FRUM A HATT

MOWS DESENDING INA PARASHOOT

TO DUX TIPTONE PASST A SLEPEN FOCKS.

And here's a bonus . . .

One of my kids wrote that a looooong time ago. Can you figure out what it says?

While you're trying to figure it out, I'll leave you with the funny clip from last year's Bee . . .

Me too. LOVE the Bee. Glued to it every year. I still have my Webster's Dictionary I won in a spelling bee...hideously outdated, I'm sure. No "numnah" between those pages.

You ARE obsessed with spelling!

Nerds are the best! ;)

LOL @ your on-stage appearance! I can't believe they wouldn't let you be goofy. What fun is that?

That's a great book by W. Steig. My kids will love it. They've invented these doppleganger characters that they make stories about, and one of their running gags is spelling poorly. Don't ask.

I can figure out all the phrase in the book, but am not sure about my interpretation of your kid's writing. How about, "Worm came in a apple...what have"???

You're very close with your guess about the worm!

I should have been revising all day, but I spent 5 1/2 hours hyponitized by that spelling bee. And I love reading kids' writing. Worm coming out of the apple.

"Worm came in an apple. What have the . . . " At least, that's what my mom-reading skills indicate.

Lisa,
Yup, this word nerd is a big spelling bee fan, too. That YouTube clip was h-i-l-a-r-i-o-u-s!
