Martha Stewart and Lisa Yee are So Totally Twins
At this so totally exact moment, details are being firmed up for me to appear (be heard?) on Martha Stewart Living Radio. (Did you know she has her own radio station?)

The interview on the KIDSTUFF show will take place in January. However, Martha herself will not be interviewing me, which is too bad because we have so much in common. Like . . .

1. She bakes cookies. I eat cookies.
2. She once went to prison. I once got a jaywalking ticket.
3. She has her own line of "Everyday" linens. I sleep between sheets everyday. (Okay, well if you want to get technical, everynight.)
4. She is really rich. I want to be really rich.
5. She has a house in the Hamptons. I once stayed at a Hampton Inn.

On Saturday I went to Susan Patron's booksigning at Children's Book World with pal Cynthia Kadohata. I drove and am happy to report that no one got hurt. (The last time I had a Newbery winner in my car, someone almost got decapitated.) We got to the bookstore early which was good because . . . I SAW A TACO TRUCK!!!

In the name of research, I've been chasing taco trucks for my next novel. So even though it was 10:30 a.m. I thought "I should have a taco" (for research). And I did. Yum!!! Later, I asked the owner of the truck if I could go inside (for research). He thought about it, discussed it with his wife, and then said, "No."

I think he thought I was a scary person.

Post taco (Cindy was so inspired by mine, she bought one too -- see above photo for proof), we listened to Susan (who is also Senior Librarian at the Los Angeles Public Library) read from her fabulous new novel, THE HIGHER POWER OF LUCKY. I meant to take a photo at the bookstore, but was too busy yammering and forgot.

Luckily (Get it? Her book's got the word LUCKY in the title. LUCKY -- LUCKILY . . . never mind), I did manage to take this POWERful photo OF Cindy holding the book(s) HIGHER than her knees while Susan cleverly hid behind THE no parking sign, or not.

Oh, that sounds like fun!

And another thing you and Martha have in common: You eat at roach coaches. Martha ... Oh, wait. Well, I'll think of something. Just give me a few months.

Hey, maybe it's possible. Julia Child loved McDonald's French fries.

Congratulations! I didn't know there was a Martha radio station but now I wish I had it. I really enjoy reading your blog entries.

So, about the jaywalking thing- do you think that if you had run from the police officer you would have been chased? Was it a bike police person or a car one?

I would like to think that we all have a litle Martha- when one day we decide to make stock from scratch, attempt to cook duck, origami the napkins into the Statue of Liberty and re-upholster the car.

I, briefly, considered running (in college you have those sort of thoughts about evading the law), However it was clear that I was guilty since I was standing on a concrete island in the middle of a busy street. Plus, I there were TWO motorcycle policemen asking me to to come over to them and about a dozen witnesses. It was very humilating.

Well, I have two out of five things in common with you and Martha.

Sounds like it was your LUCKY day.

Martha provided me with an inside tip that you were going to be on her radio show, so I knew about it ahead of time.

Are you absolutely certain you won't be interviewed by that Martha person, personally? Please be careful; you might get too close to her and become a, well, a Martha.

As ever,

Colin

I linked over from the SCBWI boards, and picked up right away on your Martha Stewart interview plans. Up until a few weeks ago, I didn't know there was such a Good Thing, either, but I'm being interviewed on Tuesday to talk about Thanksgiving myths and promote my book, Great Colonial America Projects You Can Build Yourself. Wish me luck, and same to you!
