A Whole Lotta Authors, Editors, Agents, and Illustrators, Part One
Oh man. I'm tired, exhausted, happy, pooped and did I say tired? And I'll bet the other 96,135,001 (give or take a few) other attendees at the SCBWI Conference are too. Today was the last day of workshops-speeches-parties-critiques-cold-meeting-rooms-book-buying-singing-laughing-and-learning.

The night before the conference, there was a faculty dinner. I sat next to gal pal Newbery winner Susan Patron. The last time I had seen Susan was at her book launch party for THE HIGHER POWER OF LUCKY. (Disclaimer: I may have seen her since then, but my brain is on overload and the memory section isn't working right now.)

It was also great to meet Sara Pennypacker, winner of this year's Sid Fleischman Humor Award for her wonderful book, CLEMENTINE . . .

The next morning, faculty members were ordered to march on stage, do a short interpretive dance of their favorite book, and come up with an inspiring word. (One of those isn't true.) When we lined up, I forgot my word. My editor, the amazing Arthur Levine, suggested I say a place, but instead I decided to say "nap." So imagine my surprise when instead I blurted out "peri-menopause."

After a great keynote by Walter Dean Myers, it was time to start critiquing. Over 400 people had their manuscripts or art portfolios reviewed by agents, authors, editors and art directors . . .

(Above: The critique room was larger that 20 football fields, almost.)

Later, it was time to catch up authors like Jeapordy!-contestant Linda Sue Park. Linda Sue and I are now pals, even though I almost killed her. But look, she doesn't seem scared of me anymore . . .

The ever-popular-and-always-entertaining John Green is no longer as tall as he used to be . . .

And LAYA and super-talented Cecil Castellucci told Peepy the secrets to her success(es) . . .

Well, there's soooooo much more to tell. So stay tuned for the next episode of SCBWI, the Reality Series.

It sounds like the conference was as wild and wonderful as always. I wish I could have heard your keynote; I have no doubt it was a grand success!

Well, If I don't get to be there at least I get to live vicariously through you! I'll just pretend Peepy is actually ME in all those pictures with those uber amazing people!
Thanks!

Of course now I realize Linda Sue Parks probably wouldn't appreciate me sitting on her head. And it'd probably take Arthur Levine more than one hand to support my whole weight, too. Not to belittle his strength or anything 'cause I have no doubt he's an immensely strong person. I'll just stop typing now.

God that is funny. I was talking to Susan and Sara and had no idea who they were. Duh.

I guess every writer has a moment where they feel they are really a writer and I think last night was that moment for me. That was whole lotta fun.

It could also have been when my agent called me while I was having gin and tonics by the pool with a couple of my heroes...

Woo-hoo!

I'm going back to sleep now...

Okay, wait. I just realized I may be wrong. Is your new book a graphic novel? I only got a peek at it and assumed it was.

I though the breakout session Peepy did "How to escape the slushpile and the microwave" was among the best I'd ever seen....

Thanks, once again, for brightening the four faboo days!

It was great peeping you at the conference. I enjoyed you keynote address and thought it was especially nice that Hubby and Son were in the audience.

It was wonderful to meet you.

About the critique room -- too bad you didn't photgraph the far end of it, where there was a piece of janitorial equipment that looked suspiciously like a Zamboni machine.

The biggest and most oddly shaped and appointed. It's a weirdness trifecta.

My purple fountain pen was so overwhelmed with excitement that you used it to sign my copy of Emily Ebers that it breathed its last immediately post-signing. :)

And I forgot to mention that Peepy's cousin lives with my nephew in Arizona.

It was great meeting you, Lisa. Em was absolutely psyched that you talked to her and convinced the D-Man that she should indeed put some peeps in the microwave.

Afterwards she was all, "Oh..Oh... I forgot to tell her I like her books."
So, um, Em likes your books. I think you already knew, but, hey, now she's covered.

It was so great to meet you at the conference! (Where I did need that sweater you suggested I bring along.) You are truly just as nice in person as you are "in print." I think you might be even funnier in person, which makes me worry that I am never going to be able to get humor into my books since I am no where near as funny as you are. :)

I loved both your talks and I was really encouraged to hear you say that your characters don't talk to you. Mine don't either and every time I hear an author saying that I worry that I'm not really a writer. Silly, I know, but on the road to publication I think writers obsess about all kind of things.

Oh, and even though I did know there are five points of view (or more), I loved your explanation of them and knowing your books, I took the title of your workshop to be just the way you wrote it. I was glad you included some comments on how you come up with different "points of view" for your characters. Thanks again for being a great part of the conference! (Now, back to the laundry... even though I was gone my husband and kids still wore clothes, but they did clean house before I got back home so I am not complaining!)

Post the Peepy scarf! Post the Peepy scarf!

Although now I think about it.... is the Peepy scarf made out of a microwaved cousin of Peepy ironed on to a scarf? If so then that is kinda, well... Peepy Creepy.

It was great to see you!

Write on!

Marilyn
