Lotta Authors and Others starring in Conference Confidential, Part 2
Hmmmm . . . let's see, where were we?

Oh, that's right. We were grocery shopping with our friends . . .

Oops. That was last month. We were at the mega-marvelous SCBWIXYZ National Conference!

Okay, so on Day Deux I did more manuscript critiques. All went well and no one cried! (Critiquers and Critiquees were instructed not to throw carrots at each other or to make each other weep.)

I attended a really funny-insightful keynote by Printz-winning, nerdfighting John Green. See if you can find me in the audience . . .

(Above: John asks the audience to say hi to his brother Hank, asks the populace to support a candidate, and talks about leg waxing. Plus I make a slight cameo--but it has nothing to do with waxing.)

(Above: Flanked by Moi and Dutton editrix Julie Strauss-Gabel, John decides to stand on his tippy toes -- HA! I wrote tipsy toes first, by accident.)

That evening it was time for The Light of the Silvery Moon Gala. I had brought a roll of tin foil to make a costume with, but didn't need it because blog buddy Julie Winkler MADE ME A WONDERFUL PEEPY SCARF . . .

(Above: Lisa wearing Peepy scarf and some tin foil. Newberyesque Linda Sue Park made her outfit out of duct tape and sterling silver-like material.)

(Above: Neither Linda Sue nor Moi won the costume contest, that honor went to The Rushmore Kid.)

Everyone at the party got very unchildren's book-like and disco-ing, drinks and quesadillas abounded . . .

(Above: A very glam Erin Vincent boogies with super talented debut novelist, Jay Asher.)

(Above: Three wild and wonderful YA authors, Erin, Ellen Wittlinger, and Cecil Castellucci.)

The next day it was time for my workshop on Point of View. I got lost and almost began speaking at the agent workshop, until someone escorted me to my room . . .

(Above: There was only mood lighting in the room when people began to filter in. It seems a lot of other people got lost, too.)

The room eventually filled up, but the mood lighting remained . . .

I ran out of handouts. (I was secretly happy to have run out because I had been scared no one was going to show up.) The workshop was fun and Paula Yoo shared her thoughts on POV and picture books . . .

(Above: Paula tries not to notice the hand growing out of her neck.)

Later, I made author Deborah Davis run around on stage, do the hula, hold Peepy and make pig noises. (This was all part of the workshop--honest!)

(Above: This is not Deborah Davis, but pretend it is--I don't have a photo of her acting strange.)

Well, this is getting long, so the SCBWI Conference mini-series-reality-show will finish next blog. Stay tuned for the final chapter, it's a doozie (doozy?). Find out why Peepy threw up, what it's like to go note-less, and much, much, more!!!

I must be tired. I read your comment and thought, "Did I give a talk in the bathroom?"

Well, now Peepy is convinced she is a star. She keeps talking about her own line of scarves and claims gowns will soon follow.

Thanks for the great workshop, Lisa! I've gone back and thought of a single word for each character, as you said you do, and they are close to my computer for reference. Even if I got nothing else out of the conference (I did, though... :) ), that one thing has already helped me immensely. Thanks!

Lisa,

Thanks for the great photos and comments. I "almost" felt like I was there. Next year, I hope to actually be there, especially if I get to stand around with Depp, Firth and Pitt. Hmmm. Actually, I'd probably be more thrilled to be in the company of Green, Levine and Myers. I'm such a book nerd!

Peepily yours,
Donna

I'm so sad, Lisa. I didn't get a chance to meet you at the conference! I was trying to look for you and Peepy at the party Saturday night but couldn't find you. But I had to leave right before 9pm anyway (I was tired and had to drive back to South Orange County). Oh well. At least I saw your speech. It was awesome. As a chinese american myself, I totally agree. I think Russell Freedman is more chinese than I am. (I bought his book on Confucious and had him sign it...the more we talked the more I wanted to slink away because he was naming places in China when he stopped and gave me a look that said, "you have no idea do you?"). Oh well. What I got from you speech was to "be who you are."

Oh and by the way, from far away your husband kinda does look like Brad Pitt. tee hee.

I have one more question. It's personal so you don't have to answer if you don't want to. When you got married, did you change your name? I haven't (it has been 5 years), but when I write my book I'm thinking of using my would-be married name. Even though I didn't change it, at least I can pretend. Does that make sense??

I kept my maiden name when I got married. However, my kids have Hubby's last name, and his last name is now my middle name.

As for your author name, it should be whatever you want it to be! (Except it can't be J. K. Rowling because that's already taken.)

Ingenious.

Hm, I guess I can't use Lisa Yee either...although it may help me with book sales. Tee hee.

Thank you for the advice!!

Uglydolls

Hey Lisa! I have to give props to the above creatures "Uglydolls" by David and Sun-Min. I slept in David's bedroom at his mom's house for the rest of my LA trip (I just got back). Susan Brady (wonderful author, illustrator, toy inventor, and horticulturist) is my very best friend. David's room (aka "The Shrine" by Susan's husband) is filled with all David's creations... even all his famous Japanese lines. And many of them glow in the dark at night!!!!! Thankfully they didn't hop in bed with me during the earthquake!!!
It was great seeing you... your speech on Ethnic Diversity was fantastic!!!
BTW Mac McCool is super cool. I hope to post on my LJ soon!!!!

Hey Lisa!

It was wonderful seeing you at the conference again. And it was hilarious to see where your Peep popped up...which happened to be ALL OVER THE PLACE!

Hey Lisa,
It was a privilege to meet you again this year AND have you sign Millicent Min. Loved the Peepy scarf...hope you didn't spill any margarita on him ;0
Your talk was inspiring...the ballroom one without the notes that is...not the mood lighting one...
Being a half-breed and quite confused about my own culture, heritage and roots, you spoke directly to me and I take heart in knowing that others have been there before me...walked the walk...talked the talk...and come out of it with wonderful tales to tell...thanks!

OK before anyone says anything...let me clear something up...
I'm NOT saying the mood-lighting talk wasn't brilliantly inspiring...I wouldn't know if it was or wasn't...I'm sure it was though...just that I wasn't there...can I take my foot out of my mouth now?
