Little Women, Little Men, Little Peep Explosion
School starts next week, and not a moment too soon.

I can recall when I was on the other end of school-startingness and wanted to stretch out summer for as loooooooong as possible. But for a mom/author who works out of the house, it's hard to get writing done when the young-uns are around. Heck, it's hard to get writing done, period. (Click here for cure.)

Take the other day for example. Son and Son's Friend were running around the house screaming, as they are apt to do. So I cornered them and shouted, "Who wants to blow up Peeps???!!!"

Son's Friend had never done this before (poor child), so Son and I took it upon ourselves to introduce him to the sport. And lo and behold and bepeep . . . he was a natural at it!

But see! See how distracting it is to try to write when kids are around!!!

Speaking of kids, over at The Horn Book Magazine, there's a specialicious issue coming out for September/October . . . just in time for the beginning of school! The current issue is dedicated to "boys and girls."

Topic: Little Women, Little Men -- Children's and YA writers on how one's gender affects one's reading.

Here's a sampling of essayists . . . M. T. Anderson, Coe Booth, Cecil Castellucci, Andrew Clements, John Green, Pete Hautman, Emily Jenkins, David Levithan, Gregory Maguire, Lynne Rae Perkins, Mitali Perkins, Brian Selznick, Virginia Euwer Wolff, and Moi!!!

P.S. A heartfelt thanks to all of you who wished me birthday greetings. I was so moved that I have decided to extend my birthday for another month.

Oh! And here's a clip of someone who could have used a wee bit more schooling ...

(She came in third.)

Poor Miss Teen.
But what would be the answer to that question?
And what group of Americans did they poll that there was such a high percentage that couldn't find the US on a map? Maybe they polled their audience!

I think as a country we should stop relying on our beauty contestants to solve world problems!

LOL, there's a stupid answer to a stupid question. One out of five Americans can't find the US on a map? They expect us to believe that? I probably would have stammered like an idiot too.:-) Although if things really were that bad, it would explain why she lumped South Africa, Asia, and "The Iraq's" educational systems together.

A better answer--"Because outraged Peeps have infiltrated our educational system, and are slowly morphing our brains into marshmallows. They are in league with Mc Donalds, South Africa, and all the other forces of evil threatening our civilization."

Yes, actually, I have been wondering how you get your seemingly inexhaustable supply of peeps- can you buy them year-round these days, or do you just fill your garage at easter?

Will there be a battle of the autumnal peeps? Can we place bets already? I vote for pumpkin peep. Which is a bit silly really; from the looks of it, there are no winners when the gladiator peeps leave the arena. ;o)

Believe it or not, I still have lots of Peeps leftover from Easter. After the holiday, a friend of mine raided all the stores when the Peeps were heavily discounted and kept giving them to me. They don't explode as well as fresh ones though.

I saw that horrifying You Tube clip of Miss S.C. a couple days ago. Yeesh! Painful! And to think, she actually gets decent grades...or that's what her spin doctor was saying the very next day.
