Freak(onimics) and Geeks and Green

Finishing up an outline for my book about Emily, Millicent Min's best friend. It is going well, and without the usual angst, which must mean that something is wrong.

On Monday I went to a reading by Paul Feig for his new book SUPERSTUD. He was hilarious! I am a HUGE fan of his defunct TV series, FREAKS AND GEEKS, and even own the DVD set. Paul was speaking at Vroman's in Pasadena. It's a wonderful place. I'll be there in October when STANFORD WONG FLUNKS BIG-TIME comes out.

After getting two books signed (one for me, one for someone's birthday, but I can't say their name in case they are reading this), I did my usual crawl through the children's department to see if they had any copies of MILLIE. I noticed that in the AFTERWORDS display where MILLIE has resided this summer, she was AWOL. So I gathered up my nerve and asked if there were any more copies. The (very, very nice) bookstore person found a three more, and not only put them on the display, but also put one on the featured table. THANK YOU!

Last weekend we went to see WICKED, the musical. It was great. The story of the Glinda, the Good Witch's evil sister. Turns out she wasn't always that way, just misunderstood because she was green. Loved the other-side-of-the-story aspect. Reminded me of my MIllie Trilly, written from three different POVs.

Tonight, it's back to Vroman's to hear the authors of FREAKONOMICS. A fascinating book on economic and seemingly odd factoids. (I'm not being sarcastic, it really is a great book!)

I'm reading Paul Feig's book at the moment and laughing my way through it. I was going to read a book Cheryl Klein gave me called, called . . . oh. I'm going to have to look it up. Just got smashed with a bout of short-term memory loss. Anyway, the Cheryl book got lost. My daughter is redoing her room. Again. And she was reading it and now we can't find it. But it will turn up. Eventually. Most things do.

I have those DVDs, too! Can you believe I haven't watched them all yet? I don't want to use them up. That show is pure genius. I laugh, I cry, I listen to my Led Zep albums.

Paul said the character most like himself was Lindsay. When writing the show, he thought, "A 17-year old girl is really mature. So I figured, she'd be as mature as a 37-year old man." And then he wrote from there, giving her words like, "Hey! Why is there injustice in the world????"

Re: HI LISA

Hey Tracie,

I really enjoyed lunch, too. Hope our paths will cross again! (Only with better weather.)
